Dr. Ravindra Mehta is a Professor Emeritus of Medicine at the University of California San Diego where he directs the UCSD Master of Advanced Studies in Clinical Research program and is the site PI of the NIH-funded UAB/UCSD O’Brien Center for AKI research. He chairs the annual International AKI and CRRT Conference in San Diego that is in its 25th year in 2020. He is a founding member of the Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative (ADQI) and the Acute Kidney Injury Network (AKIN). His research has informed the development of the KDIGO guidelines for AKI. He has spearheaded several innovative multicenter studies on AKI including the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) AKI 0by25 project. In 2008 he was recognized by the American Nephrologists of Indian Origin and in March 2009 he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in the UK. He received the ISN Bywaters Award for lifetime achievement in AKI in 2011 and in 2020 the ISN honored him by establishing a fellowship in AKI in his name. He received the M.B.B.S. degree (1976) from the Government Medical School in Amritsar, India, and the M.D. (1979) and D.M. (1981) degrees from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India. He obtained his boards in Internal Medicine (1986) and Nephrology (1988) at the University of Rochester in Rochester New York. He has been on the faculty at San Diego since 1988.
Accomplishments
- Hosted the 25th International AKI and CRRT meeting at the Manchester Hyatt in San Diego Feb 24-28 which is a premier meeting on Critical Care Nephrology that he started and has held annually (crrtonline.com )
- Organized an international consensus conference of the Acute Disease Quality Initiative (ADQI) held virtually in May-June on COVID-19 and AKI providing recommendations for management. These have been published in Nature Reviews in Nephrology https://doi.org/10.1038/s41581-020-00356-5
- Along with Dr. Etienne Macedo Initiated a global study evaluating COVID-19 positive patients with kidney disease (Global Assessment of Acute Kidney Disease Incidence and Outcomes in Patients with COVID-19 Infection). - Presented lectures in person and virtually across different nephrology and Critical care meetings including the Advanced Nephrology course in San Diego, International Symposium on Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine ( ISICEM) meeting in Brussels, The American Society of Nephrology meeting in Denver; The Chilean Society of Nephrology meeting in Santiago Chile, The SLANH Course on AKI from Montevideo Uruguay, the Peking University Hospital course in Beijing and the West China Hospital Course in Chengdu and the International Society of Nephrology webinar in Hyderabad India and the IRRIV Course on AKI in Vicenza Italy
- Participated in the Kidney Health Initiative Workshop on Accelerating the Development of Biomarkers for Acute Kidney Injury: to develop a technology roadmap in response to the immediate unmet need for biomarkers for acute kidney injury (AKI) to better inform drug development and patient care. This is a joint project with the American Society of Nephrology, FDA and the NIH
- Participated and presented at the Kidney Disease Clinical Trialists (KDCT) meeting in Washington DC on Phenotypes of AKI
- Participated in the National Kidney Foundation and Society for Cardiovascular Imaging and interventions consensus meeting on Management of Patients with Kidney Disease in need of Cardiovascular Catheterization
- Submitted an NIH NIDDK UO1 grant application with Dr. Macedo for a clinical trial on optimizing management of patients post-AKI hospitalization
- Published 13 articles in peer-reviewed journals including JAMA, NEJM, Plos One, Kidney International, Am J Physiology, and CJASN and submitted 3 book chapters
- Presented lecture on Career development in the MAS ISP B Seminar series
- Served on the steering committee for Am Pharma REVIVAL Phase 3 trial for alkaline phosphatase treatment for septic AKI and DSMB for a Sanofi Trial for Alport’s syndrome
