Back to clinical roots, with time for family and new skills for research management
If structuring a diverse portfolio is great for investments, why not also structure a diverse career – one that responds to changing family demands, fluctuating economies, and the varied talents and interests of a curious mind?
This approach worked well for Khaudeja Bano, a physician focused in obstetrics-fertility medicine in India who shifted gears in the 1990s when she arrived in the U.S. and discovered a strong market for her analytical skills. After 8 years enmeshed in database technologies, Khaudeja yearned to return to her clinical roots. An all-consuming medical practice would demand too much time away from her young daughter—growing up all too quickly. Khaudeja needed a career option that would balance the personal and the professional.
A Master’s Degree in Clinical Research from
UC San Diego was the answer. With the program’s flexible approach, Khaudeja neatly fit her studies into a full schedule—with no compromise in academic rigor.
Real-world benefits
The program at UCSD delivers unique and relevant benefits for each student. Program highlights for Khaudeja included:
Program scope:
Khaudeja particularly valued that the master’s program covers the full spectrum of clinical research, including management, her current professional focus. The program increased her awareness of how the U.S. healthcare industry works— including regulatory bodies such as the Data Safety and Monitoring Board (DSMB), responsible for monitoring clinical trial participant risk.
Applied experience/faculty reviews:
The program brings individual research interests under the real-world spotlight. As part of coursework, students can develop grant proposals and research protocols with close faculty review, a key learning experience for Khaudeja.
First-class faculty and mentoring:
Exceptional faculty and mentoring add up to one high-impact education and professional network.
Connecting with colleagues:
Developing close relationships with fellow students—sharing ideas and notes, developing study groups—was a highlight for Khaudeja, one that continues to pay off in long-term relationships. What better way to network with today’s and tomorrow’s “movers and shakers” in this fast-paced field, and to become one?
Flexibility of schedule:
For this full-time working mother, a highly flexible schedule, including weekend and evening classes, extended over 2.5 years, was a must.
Real-world results
New knowledge and tools strengthen our graduates’ roles within their organizations and industries. For Khaudeja, this meant:
Career options in quality and research science, leading to a research position with Abbott Laboratories, helping to ensure vascular device meets regulatory requirements.
Promotion to Manager of Product Surveillance, team of 11 staff, Quality Assurance, Abbott Laboratories.
Work/life balance. The part-time program allowed Khaudeja to preserve important family time and serve as a role model to her growing daughter, Nishat, who accompanied her mom to some Saturday seminars–and offered some valuable insights to the class!
